For the 12 months ending November 2010 versus our baseline year of 2005, globally the H.J. Heinz Company has reduced GHG emissions by 14.1%. For the same period in Canada, GHG emissions have reduced by 16.2%. Not only has the Renée’s plastic conversion initiative helped us achieve interim CO2reduction targets, it also will contribute significantly to reductions in transportation energy consumption.
Heinz is determined to achieve significant reductions in the Company’s emissions of GHG, especially carbon dioxide (CO2). Focusing on sustainable packaging efforts is a critical component of achieving our GHG reduction commitment.
In June 2010, Renée’s Gourmet traded in its glass bottle for a more consumer friendly and sustainable option. Plastic packaging was preferred by Renée’s consumers who chose plastic over glass because it was lightweight and less likely to break. The new Renée’s Gourmet plastic packaging is recyclable and over 75% lighter in weight than the former glass packaging which reduces energy consumption and GHG’s during transportation to and from our manufacturing plant in St. Marys, Ontario as well as from our customers’ distribution centres to their stores.
